Find your dancing shoes – Apparat, Discodromo, Jori and Tiga comes to town

If you are in Helsinki and have hung up your dancing shoes for good, you better take them down and give them a polish! Why? March is going to be sweaty, loads of good dj gigs coming up!

First of all, Im not sponsored by Adams! Its just that they are putting together an impressive program for their first anniversary celebration, which is kicked off by…

Apparat tomorrow (March 1st)! Seen him + band live, listened to some of his dj mixes and really looking forward to the new Moderat album later this year. So this is just a no-brainer, do not miss the chance to experience Sascha Ring spinning records for you!

On March 15th Discodromo will probably get most of the city’s bears to come out of their hibernation. Anyhow it should be a good one by a duo that has collaborated with Hard Ton and done a really nice edit of a Ilona Staller (better known as la Cicciolina) song.

And finally on Thursday 28th of March Tiga will play along with Jori Hulkkonen. The grapevine is that the gig will also be a release party for their new 12″. Friday is bank holiday so no need to take it easy…

Other notable dj gigs and concerts in March:

Sin Cos Stan @ Kuudeslinja

Calyx & Teebee @ Venue

Fatboy Slim @ Wonder Festival

So give those dancing shoes a shine and enjoy a great month of music!

new album: Ian Pooley “What I Do”

Ian Pooley has released his first album in 4 years, and it is almost like he has reinvented his sound. At least its more fresh and makes you wanna dance on the kitchen floor! The two stand out tracks are with out a doubt Compurhythm (read more about that ep here) and the beautiful “1983” featuring the smooth voice of Högni Egilsson.

“What I Do” is released by Ian’s own label Pooled Music, and should be available everywhere as a digital download or on cd. But if you have the same problem as me that the local record store has closed down (in fact I think there actually never have been one around here), you can at least order it from Amazon. A 28 minutes album teaser and tracklist can be found after the jump.

RIP Donald Byrd

Few days ago Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II passed away, meaning we have lost a truely gifted jazz and blues trumpeter. Born in Detroit, 1932, he was a sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, like John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.

For me though, I’ll remember him for being Guru‘s sideman on “Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1” and a producer on “Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality”.

Its not only MToK that will remember Donald Byrd, but also the artist SCNTST. His new tune is now dedicated to the great trumpeter since it contains samples of the very funky “Kofi” (original after the jump). The German has also made it available as a free download for us.

World premier of the Wesseltoft Schwarz Ensemble

In the beginning of the year I compiled for myself a list of what acts I really wanted to see live this year. On top of that, and pretty uncontested, was Bugge Wesseltoft & Henrik Schwarz preforming. So it was with great joy I received the news that they soon would preform in Oslo, not only as a duo – but as an ensemble!

The planning of the trip was done in an hour or so! The possibility to experience an enseble consisting of Bugge Wesseltoft (piano virtuoso), Henrik Schwarz (computer genius), the brilliant Austrian hang drum specialist / percussionist Manu Delago and the renown Swedish bass player Dan Berglund, was too great to pass on.

Fast forward to 1st of February and it was with great anticipation I entered the beautiful Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene. It is probably one of the cutest and most intimate venues Ive ever been to, it felt like I were on the stage with ensemble during the show…

…which started on time due to the live streaming on GubeMusic. First Bugge introduced the rest and then cracked a joke, that since they now were an ensemble they could apply for governmental support. Apparently it is possible in Norway that artists with a talent of writing good applications, can earn a decent living even they almost don’t sell any records…

Bugge also told that it was his birthday and that the first piece were called “49”, so then we knew that… From that moment the music just kept rolling, everything from experimental solos and minimalistic jazz to groovy bass lines. The gig as a whole can only be described by one word – fantastic! Im so happy that I was able to experience the interactions and true joy that was shown on stage by excellent musicians.

The concert was divided into two halves by an intermission. The first half were quite relaxed and mellow with some improvisations and great solos, so the following comment was heard in the restroom at the break: “I hope there will be more techno after the break!” I dont know if it was enough techno for the German accent gent, but there were definitely more beat in the second half…

MToK is looking forward to more music from this new founded super group!

mp3: Rampue “Love You”

Have no idea who Rampue is! The only things that I’ve manage to dig up is that its a guy in the late 20’s that lives in Berlin and signed to Audiolith Records. What I DO know is that this song has been on constant repeat for the last 2 days, driving the Disco Rodents mad! Its also a free download, just perfect!

The vocal is taken from the song “I Found You” by Alabama Shakes (check out a live video after the jump), and is done by Brittany Howard.

mp3: Apparat “A Violent Sky” from Krieg und Frieden

Some artist understands the potential of social media and its power better than others. Sascha Ring is one of them. He has made a new album under his moniker Apparat, and has chosen the fans to be the promo machine for it. Here is part of the statement to the fans:

“I decided to not do a single interview, skip the promo marathon and make it available for you asap. This time YOU are the promo machine. Please share if you want to support what i’m doing.”

I guess it worked! In less than 20 hours “A Violent Sky” has got over 40 000 plays and 4000 downloads on SoundCloud. Apparat also did a hugely successful Q&A just before he revealed the news on Facebook, in less than 5 minutes there was over 200 questions for him to answer.

The new album “Krieg und Frieden – Music for Theatre” will be out via MUTE on the 15th of February. It is originally a soundtrack to a theatre play of Tolstoy’s “War and Peace”, tweaked into an album format. Sounds good!

For 2013 MToK is “Dreaming” about Bugge & Henrik

Im not exactly having a dream where they are the pin-ups in my calendar, its more like I want to experience a gig with them! Have been watching a few live video of them lately, and I have to say its a pure enjoyment to watch the harmony between them while playing. Watch the video after the jump and you will understand what I’m on…

Didnt discover their album “Duo” until this fall, but it has been on heavy rotation ever since. Their special blend of soothing jazz moods, flavoured with Henrik‘s deep electronic grooves and Bugge‘s piano, is just amazing! You can pick up the album from Jazzland Recordings.

Hippie Dance Atelier Super Limited Collectors Edition Trailer

You just have to give credit to the Pachanga Boys for their creativity and excellent ways of connecting with fans. The boys take the phrase Limited Edition to a new level! First they auction away exclusive shoes together with a 12″, then released “Christine” with a high quality art print and now they have ventured into film making…

“We Are Really Sorry” is a film that will take you for a road trip from Cologne to Cheesetown, Boottown, Coffeetown and back again. They have also made the soundtrack which you can stream after the jump. But is it really a soundtrack to the film, or is the film the visuals to the album? I guess that is the question, quite fascinating and intriguing at the same time! All four trailers for the film can be found here.

The film and soundtrack was released this week, but in the early December the Super Limited Collectors Edition will be available. This is a true gem for collectors:

“Gargantuan not only in name, this edition is bound to become a true collector’s item, containing all sorts of great goodies straight from the hands/heart of the Pachanga Boys. Besides the double 180g LP (+CD +DVD +16 page booklet), the beautiful wooden box also includes the “Fiesta Forever” music box (machinery and engraved silver plate made in Paris, mounted on African wenge wood), a 36 page psychedelic colouring book with special crayon pack, a special postcard to send the one you love and an organic cotton and Alpaca knitted tortilla chip broche.”

You actually have to see it to believe it:

“Time” will tell if Pachanga Boys were too much…

…for the neighbours. Few days ago I got fed up washing the dishes, so I turned up the volume on my old JVC Boomblaster and challenge the Disco Rodents for a dance battle! Quicly the livingroomfloor was cleand and of we went! Wilder and wilder dance moves was shown, but in the end (we didnt manage to battle the whole 15 min) we were just laying on our backs just digging the song! Pure bliss!

Pachanga Boys are Mauricio Rebolledo and Aksel Schaufler, aka Superpitcher. Together they run the label Hippie Dance, “Time” is taken from their excellent 12″ “Girlcatcher” that can be picked up from Discogs for a merely 400€…
