john foxx & jori hulkkonen “evangeline” (david lynch remix)

david lynch 006.jpg

this remix has already been around for some months and seems to become better and better with time! i just love the baseline that kicks in at 2.03, and from there it just grows into monster that is beautifully released around five minutes. pure class by mr. lynch!

mp3: John Grant “Black Belt”

John Grant has moved to Iceland and have teamed up with GusGus’ Biggi Veira for his second solo album “Pale Green Ghosts”. It will also feature the Irish singer Sinead O’Connor on guest vocals. “Black Belt” and the title track (watch the official video after the jump) promise a much more electronic and dirtier sound than the highly acclaimed, but slightly boring debut album “Queen of Denmark”.

The album will be released by Bella Union in UK on the 11th of March and Partisan Records in US 2 months later… And this is what I do not understand! Do Partisan Records expect to sell any copies at all (at least not digitally)? I mean, releasing the album over 60 days after it was made available in Europe is not a good business strategy – especially in an environment where the customer appreciate availability over quality…

Update: You can download the song by going here (the embedded code is a do not work for WordPress / stupid listen only on SoundCloud one…).

RIP Donald Byrd

Few days ago Donaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II passed away, meaning we have lost a truely gifted jazz and blues trumpeter. Born in Detroit, 1932, he was a sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, like John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock.

For me though, I’ll remember him for being Guru‘s sideman on “Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1” and a producer on “Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality”.

Its not only MToK that will remember Donald Byrd, but also the artist SCNTST. His new tune is now dedicated to the great trumpeter since it contains samples of the very funky “Kofi” (original after the jump). The German has also made it available as a free download for us.

Fingerpaint “Lunar”

After a summer with a lot of cloudy and cold days, Ive tried to keep up the spirit with this tune. Closed my eyes and dreamt about the sun shining from a blue sky! This is just pure bliss for the ears and mind…

Fingerpaint is the solo project of Tyler Blake, one half of Classixx. In “Lunar” he has used a sample of the late Arthur Russell. A relatively unknown artist during his lifetime, but a series of reissues and compilations did significantly raised his profile in the 2000s.

mp3: Little Boots “Meddle” (Designer Drugs 80’s coke jam remix)

Yesterday I spent 2 hours queuing at an airport in Norway. The security personnel is on strike (wants more money…), so an already very inefficient security check was mind blowing slow! Luckily I had this old Designer Drugs remix to listen to, so all was not bad.

Designer Drugs is the New York based duo Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson. They also run the label Sex Cult.

video: Chairlift “Amanaemonesia”

This great karaoke video has totally slipped under my radar, the dancing is so mesmerizing that Im sharing it even its a bit old (at least in the ultra hyped music blogsphere…).

Chairlift is an American synthpop duo consisting of Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly. The band is based in Brooklyn, New York. “Amanaemonesia” is taken from the bands second full length album “Something”, released this January by Columbia Records/Young Turks.

new album: Lower Dens “Nootropics”

I became aware of Lower Dens when the Danish dj Trentemøller included their song “Brains” in his narko-rock mix last month (an interesting and a bit different mixtape).

Lower Dens is a five piece band from Baltimore, Maryland US, and “Nootropics” (pronounced No-eh-tro-pics) is their second album. The album can be bought from their record label Ribbon Music. Under you can watch the official video of “Brains”, and after the jump you listen to a 3 song preview of the album. “Brains” can also be download for free (if you like it…).

RIP Adam Yauch, aka MCA (Beastie Boys)

Adam Yauch lost his battle against cancer yesterday. That he was very ill became clear last month when it was announced that he, as one of the founding members of Beastie Boys, would not attend the band’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

For a full obituary, head over to the Beastie Boys website.

Rest in Peace MCA, “Sabotage” has always been one of MToK‘s favourite music videos!

Zola Jesus live @ Tavastia, Helsinki

Last night the girl with the buzz (remixed by David Lynch and collaborated with Orbital) had her first ever concert in Helsinki, Finland. MToK was there and got pretty impressed by Nika Roza Danilova’s energetic performance!

The first thing I noticed when I came to Tavastia was that only 2 minivans was parked outside, usually there is a huge bus when there is a show. And I have to say that Zola Jesus is travelling lightly; 3 additional musicians, a keyboard, a violin, some drums and a computer – that’s all.

Take a look on the picture above (yes I know its crap, will try to go Lytro soon), there you see the core of the show – its all about her! She runs, jumps and dances a bit eccentric all over the stage so there wouldn’t have been room for more people. Then you have her voice, it is just incredible! Its amazing that the small woman can have such a powerful voice, it just grabs you and won’t let go of you until the end of the show…

All in all a great gig! A bit short, but a huge plus is that the songs beats have been turned up a few notches for the live act. So check her out if she comes to a stage near you, I think you wont be disappointed.

Big thanx goes to therasmusangel for uploading “Poor Animal” to YouTube…
